October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease, which mainly affects women.
Just last year, in 2020, there were close to 700,000 deaths from this specific form of cancer worldwide. More than 2 million people are diagnosed with this form of cancer every year.
We’ve found out most people with breast cancer under treatment or in remission suffer from a condition called Cancer Related Cognitive Impairment.
Though this condition affects all cancer patients worldwide and not only people with breast cancer, we’ve found this condition is something cancer patients have to live with for the rest of their lives.
We’ve also found there’s not much knowledge on its causes or how to treat it effectively. So we looked at ways our French lessons can help.
We have started to talk to different research groups worldwide about whether learning French can decrease the magnitude or the progression of this impairment.
Learning a new language can decrease the magnitude or the progression of cognitive impairment in older adults. Can it do the same for cognitive impairment in cancer patients?
That’s what we want to find out.
We offer laboratories something they have never had before: participants in their research can have free access to our Tokfrench A1 course lessons.
That way, we can investigate whether learning a new language can decrease the chances of cancer patients’ chances of this sort of cognitive impairment.
This is our humble contribution to advancing scientific knowledge about this cognitive impairment and how to fight it.
