The Blog

There’s a reason why Tokfrench lessons last for 15 minutes? And it’s not just attention span.

Some students ask us why Tokfrench lessons are around 15 minutes long. They’d like them to be longer.

Most of them already acknowledge and ask us, “Is it just because of a shorter attention span, or is there something else to it?”.

They know Tokfrench is well-rooted in science, so it’s a fair question. Is there a didactic explanation for our 15-minutes-long lessons?

We know our students want to move fast with their French, so we found it necessary to elaborate on this.

While 15 minutes lessons answer well to our shorter attention span, the real reason they are this long is rooted in our neurons.

Even before TikTok videos and Youtube, it was well documented our brains are better equipped to perform short-focus bursts instead of long-focus sessions.

Have you found it hard to focus in lessons at college where lessons tend to be at least one hour and sometimes even longer? It’s only human to lose focus.

Some research suggests we can maintain our focus for even less than 15 minutes, especially if monotonic. But as our students already experienced, our 15 minutes lessons are anything but monotonic.

Research shows that even if you feel as if you are focused beyond 15 minutes, you’re fooling yourself. In reality, you are less focused, and your brain is less open to absorb new information as time goes by.

A quick fix is to take breaks. Even a short interval of 2-3 minutes between 15 minutes of focused sessions are fantastic. Those short breaks should include completely different activities, like walking, playing (not a video game) or calling your grandma (it’s about time!).

We usually advise our students who want to take a few Tokfrench lessons each day to take a break in between and do something that does not include a computer screen or your phone’s screen.

Yes, one great option is to dance to the latest hit you like. Usually, songs last about 3-5 minutes, so that’s a great fit.

For our new students, we advise you to take it slow. During the first 2-3 weeks we recommend taking only one lesson each day.

After that, you can go as you feel. Your membership is unlimited, so you choose the pace which feels good for you. Our advice comes from experiencing the best way to achieve the best results, but you’re free to experiment yourself.

If you feel now like you can focus for much longer (maybe you’ve just started sipping that double espresso), go ahead and read more about the science behind Tokfrench in this link:
